Dinesh Shrestha is a talented artist who grew up in Kathmandu, Nepal and currently resides in Berkeley. As a child, he enjoyed drawing comic book characters, but it wasn't until he visited a museum in Nepal and saw a traditional Nepalese Thangka painting that he found his true calling. The intricate details in the painting brought the deity to life and inspired him to learn Nepalese Thangka (Paubha) painting.
Dinesh's older brother was already doing Thangka painting, and seeing his brother's work made him realize that it was challenging but rewarding work. This inspired him to pick up his own brush and begin painting. For Dinesh, Paubha painting is a form of sādhana, and he feels like he's doing meditation during the painting process. It has also helped him increase his patience.
Today, Dinesh works with water-based paints such as poster color (gouache) and a homemade special canvas. He has won various awards and participated in numerous exhibitions around the world, including London, New York, and Marin County. Some of his paintings are in the collections of the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum in Japan and the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, while others are with Robert Beer in London and Nepali collectors in Nepal.
